GETTYBranden Grace had to hold his nerve in the closing holes

Branden Grace

The South African shot an 8-under-62 Saturday, the lowest score ever in a major championship.

He said: "I think it helps I didn't know".

After hard conditions on Friday, Grace was able to take advantage of near-perfect golfing weather on the event's penultimate day to move to within two shots of overnight leader Jordan Spieth.

Shortly after Branden Grace shot his 62, Dustin Johnson flirted with a record low himself.

Grace even admitted in his post round interview that he had no idea of the history he had just made, "I didn't know on 18 what was going on". So, I definitely lost a couple of shots there on the last couple of holes. "If I can do that tomorrow, then I should be able to give myself a chance at it".

Here's a look the entire setup he used to make major championship history.

The 29-year-old said that his caddie, Zack Rasego, had been the first to break the news to him.

"Talking about this can go on forever", Grace said.

When Justin Thomas shot the last 63 at a major, at the U.S. Open a month ago, Miller was immediately sought out for comment.

I certainly don't want it to sound like sour grapes but it's just a fact of life that they get round with irons off the tee these days.

On the par-5 17th, Grace found the green in two and two-putted for his eighth birdie of the round.

Grace started the day 4 over and in a tie for 45th place and finished at 4 under and just two shots out of the lead held by Jordan Spieth, who hadn't teed off yet when Grace finished his round. "So obviously now it makes the day even sweeter".

Playing with Jason Dufner (66), Grace appeared loose down the stretch and laughed a few times at Dufner comments.

"My main thing was just trying not to bogey 18", he said.

Defending champion Henrik Stenson was also at three-under late in his round, while world No.2 Hideki Matsuyama was right in the mix at two-under and four off the pace. In literally hundreds of thousands of rounds major golf, this is the first time a 62 has been written in a scorecard.
