White House 'appoints' China's Xi President of Taiwan, Abe President of Japan in press release gaffe

White House Confuses Taiwan And China In Painful G20 Press Release Blunder

Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged his United States counterpart, Donald Trump, to strengthen relations in the interests of stability and prosperity of both nations and the global community, the official press reported today.

Geng Shuang, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, reported that when Beijing requested an explanation for the diplomatic faux pas, a Trump administration official referred to it as a technical error.

Of course, Xi is, in fact, the President of the People's Republic of China, while the Republic of China is what the government of Taiwan calls itself - a rather important distinction that generally United States officials have been well aware of in the past. Mr Xi is the president of the People's Republic of China. Tsai Ing-wen is the strongest woman politician in the region.

The issue of Taiwan is very sensitive to China because the mainland considers it as its breakaway province.

"It is basic knowledge for those working in diplomacy, yet this isolated incident shows how incompetent the White House staff are, how casual they are, and how poorly coordinated they are", observed Shi Yinhong, a professor of worldwide relations at the Renmin University of China.

Ties between China and the USA have suffered because of the American relationship with Taiwan, particularly after President Trump spoke on the phone with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in a break from protocol shortly after his election to the White House.

Steel Tariffs To Play Major Role At G20 Summit
The Germans are waiting to hear from President Donald Trump during the G20 summit, which begins on Friday in Hamburg, Germany. An assertive US president willing to tear up existing deals. "That hurts us, but it also hurts the Americans", he added.

"It will only make the Chinese people look down upon the American government for it to make such a low-level mistake".

The White House is also debating trade actions against Beijing, including tariffs on its steel exports and a few days before the G20 talks, Trump complained that trade between China and North Korea had grown.

This is not the first time that Trump has blundered into the extremely sensitive question of Taiwan's sovereignty.

On Saturday, according to the White House's transcript, Trump told Xi: "It's an honor to have you as a friend", and called China a "great trading partner".

The gaffe has gone largely unreported in China because the local media have no motivation to mock Trump, Shi said.
