Erdoğan discusses escalation at al-Aqsa with Israeli, Palestinian presidents in phone call

Restrictions on entry to Al-Aqsa mosque unacceptable, Erdoğan tells Palestine's Abbas, Israel's Rivlin

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a phone conversation with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas over a recent escalation at the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

Israel reopened the compound to Muslim worshippers on Sunday after imposing new security measures, including metal detectors at the entrance gates and additional security cameras.

According to WAFA, Abbas has made several contacts with world powers to discuss the ongoing Jerusalem tension.

But this week, the Waqf was boycotting the Temple Mount over Israel's decision to reinstall metal detectors at its entrances.

Israeli army officials and top security agents have all recommended removing the metal detectors during a series of phone calls on Wednesday and Thursday, according to Haaretz.

In another development, Jerusalem's top Muslim leader has called for all of the city's mosques to be closed on Friday in protest against the Israeli restrictions.

Halevi said that despite the protests, Israel will not withdraw the safety measures. The three attackers were seriously wounded, one of them was killed in cold blood, and the occupants prevented the doctors from providing assistance.

The reports came as thousands of Muslim worshippers prayed for a fourth night in a row outside the Haram al-Sharif compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, rather than enter through the metal detectors.

The compound site is holy to both Muslims, who revered it as the Noble Sanctuary, and Jews, who know it as the Temple Mount. "The metal detectors must be removed immediately", said MKs Ahmed Tibi and Osama Sa'adi (Joint List) in a statement. It later annexed the city in 1980, claiming all of Jerusalem as the Jewish state's "eternal" capital - a move never recognized by the global community. The ruins of the Biblical Jewish Temple are also found within the holy complex.

But Erdan rejected Arab accusations that new Israeli security measures are an attempt to expand control over the site and insisted they are necessary to carry out proper security checks.
