Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, long have been supporters of Habitat for Humanity, a global nonprofit housing organization working in almost 1,400 communities across the United States and in about 70 countries around the world. "Any further updates will come from the Carter Center", Reckford said at a press conference Thursday morning. But by December of that year Carter told his church that his latest brain scan showed no sign of the disease.

Thursday afternoon, a spokesperson for George W. Bush released a statement: "God Bless him, and we hope he is fine".

He and his wife Rosalynn were in Canada this week working with Habitat for Humanity to help build 150 homes in honour of the country's 150th anniversary, with a focus on Edmonton and Winnipeg.
