UAE planted fake news in Qatar row, says US

17 July 2017, 08:48 | Melanie Burgess

"The UAE had no role whatsoever in the alleged hacking", UAE ambassador Yousef al-Otaiba said in a statement. Funding, supporting, and enabling extremists from the Taliban to Hamas and Qadafi [the former Libyan leader].

"We need a regional solution and global monitoring", said Anwar Gargash, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, in prepared remarks he was scheduled to deliver on Monday in London, Reuters reported.

"This is our message: You can not be part of a regional organisation dedicated to strengthening mutual security and furthering mutual interest and at the same time undermine that security", he said. But it has denied aiding jihadist groups linked to al-Qaeda or so-called Islamic State (IS). The boycott has caused turmoil in the oil- and gas-rich emirate, which is dependent on imports by land and sea for the basic needs of its population of 2.7 million.

The UAE is seeking a regional solution for the Qatar crisis, while consulting with global partners on ways to resolve Arab concerns about Doha's links to extremist and terror groups. Shortly after the blockade was announced, the USA ambassador to Qatar rallied to Doha's defense, highlighting America's past praise for Qatar's efforts in combatting terrorism.

The Gulf crisis is the worst to hit the region since the establishment of the GCC in 1981.

With US spy agencies now apparently briefing against them, Qatar's antagonists may conclude US sympathy for their position is rapidly dwindling.

"I am still wondering how we can curb this trend of escalation, and how we can restore some positive perceptions between the stakeholders, as well as some dialogue", Cherkaoui said. We are not after regime change.

"We do see signs now, however, that our pressure is working", according to the prepared remarks by Mr Gargash that were shared before his speech.

They were quickly seized on by news organisations outside Qatar, but Doha said they were false. "But we can not have a member who is undermining us and supporting extremism", he said.

In June, Qatar said its "neighbouring countries" were linked to the attacks.

Later that day, the official Qatar News Agency quoted Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani as criticising USA "hostility" towards Iran, describing it as an "Islamic power that can not be ignored", and calling Hamas the "legitimate representative of the Palestinian people".

Officials became aware last week that newly analyzed information gathered by USA intelligence agencies confirmed that on May 23, senior members of the UAE government discussed the plan and its implementation.
