A second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki three days later on Aug. 9, 1945 and Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945 bringing an end to World War II.

But Japan, together with the world's nuclear weapon states and other countries under the USA umbrella have recently refused to participate in the United Nations treaty.

People gathered at the Hiroshima memorial at 8:15 a.m. and observed a moment in silence paying respects for those who were killed when the first atomic bomb "Little Boy" was dropped on Hiroshima by a USA bomber on August 6, 1945, killing an estimated 140,000 people within few months. Japan is the only country to have suffered atomic attacks, in 1945.

A minute of silence was observed in the city to remember the dead and a call to eliminate nuclear weapons.

"They reminded the world of the devastating humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons, Guterres said, and expressed United Nations support for global effort for a world free of nuclear weapons".

Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui urged that the "absolute evil" of atomic weaponry be banished. You could find yourself suffering their cruelty.

In the city's annual peace declaration, Matsui pointed out that it is time to "strive to advance further towards a nuclear-weapon free world".

"The states possessing nuclear weapons have a special responsibility to undertake concrete and irreversible steps in nuclear disarmament".

In his message to Hiroshima, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the presence of some 15,000 nuclear weapons, along with "dangerous rhetoric regarding their use", has exacerbated the threat they pose.

He noted that adoption of the treaty was the outcome of the campaign focused on the unconditional unacceptability of the use of nuclear weapons.
