Gunmen Attack Church In Southeastern Nigeria, 8 Killed

Security agents were said to have cordoned off the church.

"When the chaos subsided I went inside, I saw my fellow church members dead in a pool of their own blood and many others were screaming in pain", said Chukwuma Emeka, a witness.

"We gathered that worshippers for 6 o'clock Sunday mass at St. Philip Ozobulu were in the service when a gunman dressed in black attire covering his face with a cap entered the church and moved straight to a particular direction and opened fire".

There were varying accounts of what happened in Ozubulu.

Umar added that the injured were taken to the hospital in Nnamdi, the state's second largest city.

He said the gunmen then went on rampage and "shot at the remaining worshippers numbering". They feared that up to 20 people may have died.

He explained that the police concluded that it was the work of an indigene because the attacker was speaking undiluted Igbo language at the time he was firing at worshippers.

The gunmen had gone to kill the son of a local chief but failed to find him at his home, Umeagbalasi said.

On his part, Oseloka Obaze, a former Secretary to Anambra Government, said such callous attacks dehumanised the society.

The governor said that the attackers who attacked the church opened fire when they perceived that one of the people they are targeting has his vehicle parked outside the church.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara has also expressed displeasure over the attack, describing it as abominable, barbaric and inhuman.
