The Dow Jones industrial average appeared to be on track for an 10th straight gain - one short of the all-time record - until Trump, speaking from his Bedminster, NJ, golf resort, promised to bring "fire and fury like the world has never seen" on North Korea if the country continues to threaten the US.
U.S. markets fell on Wednesday morning, spooked by rising tension between the United States and North Korea.
The Dow closed down 33 points, at 22,085.34. Mainland markets also traded below the flat line, with the Shanghai Composite slipping 0.18% and the Shenzhen Composite lower by 0.14%.
WALL STREET: Losses in health care and consumer-focused companies pulled US stocks lower, snapping a 10-day winning streak for the Dow Jones industrial average. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 tumbled 1.3 percent to 19,738.71 while Seoul's Kospi fell 1.1 percent to 2,368.39.
BlackBerry Ltd shares fell as much as 3.6% on the Toronto Stock Exchange after brokerage Goldman Sachs issued a "sell" recommendation on the stock, citing concerns about rising competition in its mobile software business.
US stocks felt significant early drag, with the S&P 500 down 0.5% at the open.

Gold miners Randgold Resources and Fresnillo were among the only gainers on the FTSE, up 1.9 to 2.3 percent as investors rushed to the safety of gold. The Nasdaq composite fell 35 points, or 0.5 percent, to 6,336.
Martin van Vliet, a senior rates strategist at ING, said the market move in German bonds was exacerbated by speculative bets on futures derivative contracts, rather than actual trading in the underlying assets.
FLOUNDERING: SeaWorld Entertainment slid 4.3 percent after the theme park operator reported second-quarter revenue that fell short of Wall Street's expectations. Henry Schein lost 5.1 percent and Microsoft lost 0.6 percent.
