Harford County Public Library Celebrates Solar Eclipse

09 August 2017, 12:30 | Hattie Nash

Although this eclipse won't be a particularly impressive one, a lunar eclipse so soon before a solar eclipse may seem like an embarrassment of riches.

A local amateur astronomy enthusiast will provide insight at a Lawrence County Public Library program about the upcoming solar eclipse.

The geographic location where the shadow of an eclipse falls changes from one eclipse to the next, and the big deal about the Solar Eclipse on August 21st is that it will entirely bisect the United States from "sea to shining sea". You can get your own pair of eclipse safe-viewing glasses at the planetarium weekdays from 7:30 a.m.to 4 p.m.

As excitement about the total eclipse of 2017 continues build, Georgetown (S.C.) County's Hammock Coast is offering an idyllic setting and a wide variety of eco and historic venues to enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime event.

For the first time since 1918, all of America will witness an eclipse that will cast its shadow to both edges of the United States. "Because it's such a rare and exciting event, we wanted to create an interactive guide that everyone could enjoy". The times of darkness from the eclipse will shorten as you move away from the path of totality, with the areas the furthest away experiencing on a few seconds of darkness.

A lunar eclipse takes place only at full moon. However, only about 0.1 percent of the earth's surface will see each eclipse. "For Kansas City the last eclipse was 1806, for Columbia, Missouri and St Louis it was 1442, and for Jefferson City, it was even longer ago".

At exactly 2:42 p.m. the daylight will turn dark.

"All eclipse-related programming is free", Bain said. The Umbra is the zone of a total solar eclipse, where the moon will completely block out the sun's light. The video shows both the sun glint and the moon's shadow as they trek across the western Pacific Ocean. The phenomenon occurs when the moon moves through the outer part of the Earth's shadow, blocking a part of the sunlight from reaching the moon and causing it to appear larger than normal. Experience totality, then, as soon as the bright Sun begins to reappear, replace your solar viewer to glance at the remaining partial phases.
