Mueller requests White House documents on Flynn: report

JUNE 21 2017 FILE

Witnesses have been questioned about possible secret payments from the Turkish government to Flynn, according to the report.

Allegations that former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was paid by the Turkish government during the waning days of the 2016 presidential campaign are being investigated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who has requested documents regarding Flynn from the White House. The alleged payments were reportedly made in exchange for a campaign discrediting a cleric accused of orchestrating the military coup that threatened to overtake Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan in July 2016. The document request is one more sign Mueller's team is expanding its investigation beyond Russian Federation to the business dealings of Trump and his team.

"Though not a formal subpoena, the document request is the first known instance of Mr. Mueller's team asking the White House to hand over records", said the Times, which cited unnamed people close to the investigation for the report.

Flynn resigned after less than one month in office for failing to fully disclose the details of his December communications with the Russian ambassador in Washington to White House officials.

Flynn was President Donald Trump's national security adviser for just 24 days, but he has become one of the central figures in the investigation of possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump presidential campaign.
