Path of totality for the Aug. 21 solar eclipse
The moon passes right in front of the sun at just the right time so that we go from light to darkness in just a few minutes.
The first 200 people to the library on the day of the event will receive solar eclipse glasses to ensure safe viewing for the historic event. A total solar eclipse means that Earth, the sun, and the moon, which all orbit in space in predictable paths, will align. He said that a partial lunar eclipse, which is called the penumbral part of the eclipse, will also be seen.
We'll update this post as more information becomes available in the weeks leading up to the eclipse. Here is an example from 2001 when a total eclipse passed over Zambia and dropped the air temperature nearly 15 degrees. It's also the first total eclipse to come transcontinental for nearly 100 years.
Only use certified solar eclipse glasses to view the eclipse in Coos County. Use the app to find out exactly what you'll see at your specific location, or find the closest locations to the path of totality.with navigation tools to help you get there.
The eclipse will start in Sherman at 11:40 a.m. on August 21, and will be at its peak at 1:09 p.m. To avoid permanent damage to your eyes, make sure you choose special viewing glasses.
One town in the path of totality for this year's solar eclipse was the site of a weather research project during another solar eclipse in southeastern United States over 100 years ago.
