White supremacists march through UVA; brawl with protesters

Donald Trump

Mayor Mike Signor announced the death on his Twitter account and urged people to "go home". A Virginia State Police spokesperson told The Washington Post that injuries ranged from minor to life-threatening.

A dozen medics were seen carting the injured back and forth on stretchers at the scene. They were outnumbered by hundreds of jeering counter-protesters.

A second video shows the silver auto reversing down several blocks, its front bumper dragging along the ground, as the driver flees the scene of the carnage.

Counter-protesters arrived with a sign reading "UVA students act against white supremacy".

After the violent outbursts, politicians tweeted their disdain at the events in Charlottesville.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides", Trump said.

Officials have now declared a state of emergency to allow authorities to request extra help, if needed.

Thousands of people are expected at the Unite the Right rally being held at Emancipation Park, formerly known as Lee Park. Another read "diversity is just a genocidal scam".

City and UVA officials condemned Friday's march.

Fights broke out between the two groups of demonstrators, with some marchers swinging their torches.

Other footage shows people clashing in the town, with violence breaking out among protesters and counter-demonstrators. "Multiple injuries are reported".

President Donald Trump took to Twitter to denounce the violence. The crowd quickly dispersed and police cleared the area, which had earlier been the site of aggressive clashes.

Fistfights and screaming matches erupted shortly before rally's scheduled noon ET start.

At one point, the far right group surrounded a smaller batch of counter protesters while yelling "you will not replace us".

As they did so, they were met by a wall of men dressed in body armour and helmets, some of whom used pepper spray, police said.

House Speaker Paul Ryan called the views of the white nationalists "repugnant", and called for Americans to unite against "this kind of vile bigotry". "They will reveal themselves to be violent, intolerant, opposed to free speech, the insane enforcers of political correctness, etc.' The organizers of the rally want confrontation; do not gratify their desire". The city has also renamed Lee Park, where the statue stands, and Jackson Park, named for Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.

The judge made the decision around 8pm last night.

City Attorney S. Craig Brown disagreed, saying the statements were simply councilors exercising their First Amendment rights.

The decision comes after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit on Thursday against changing the location of the rally to McIntire Park.

The so-called alt-right is a white nationalist movement that is an offshoot of conservatism that mixes mixing racist and populist elements. "I strongly condemn the unprovoked assault on members of our community, including university personnel who were attempting to maintain order".
