A rare and powerful 8.4-magnitude quake struck southern Mexico late Thursday, killing at least two people as seismologists warned of a tsunami of more than three meters (10 feet).

It posed a potential tsunami threat to the Pacific coastlines of countries including Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras, the US Tsunami Warning System said.

According to an official, the natural disaster was stronger than the 8.0-magnitude quake of 1985 that killed at least 10,000 people and destroyed a large part of Mexico City.

According to BuzzFeed News, residents in Mexico City, more than 650 miles away from the earthquake's epicenter, fled their buildings, barefoot and in robes.

Earthquake, in particular, has affected the States of Oaxaca, Chiapas and Tabasco; serious damage was caused to the city of juchitan de Zaragoza in Oaxaca. Because of the location of the quake, tsunami waves also crashed onto the Southern Mexican coast.

Green light flashes: Yahoo News reported that mysterious green and blue flashes lit up the sky outside of Mexico City following the quake.

According to an Associated Press report, Mexican authorities confirmed 35 people were killed, including two children in the state of Tabasco. Mexico City is more than 800 kilometres from the capital of Chiapas.

Meanwhile, U.S. forecasters said "hazardous" tsunami waves of more than nine feet above the tide level were possible along the Mexican coast. The quake has brought severe damage to Mexico as one million people were initially without electricity, but around 800-thousand people have got the power back.

Chiapas Gov. Manuel Velasco said the 8.1 magnitude quake was the strongest on record in state history, topping a magnitude 7.9 quake in 1902.

"We have reports of some damage and the death of one person, even though we still don't have details", Morales said.
