A man with a knife was immediately arrested after attacking a soldier at the Chatelet subway station in central Paris at about 6:30 a.m. Friday morning. No injuries were reported.

French defence minister Florence Parly said the fact that the attacker was swiftly brought under control Friday was "proof of the professionalism and efficiency of the Sentinelle soldiers in their mission to protect".

Wintesses said that the attacker made references to Islam and Allah during the incident.

The soldier is reported to have tackled his attacker to the ground before he was arrested by armed police, the Independent reports.

It is the latest in a long string of attacks on service personnel involved in Operation Sentinelle - an initiative involving 10,000 soldiers and 4700 gendarmes and police. Anti-terrorist prosecutors have been put in charge of the inquiry.

Friday's attack came one day after the government announced changes to the task force, which has been targeted in the past.

France has opened a counter-terrorism inquiry after the rising incidents of troops, stationed at capital's transport hubs and tourist sites, being attacked. But she says they also will move more easily around the country based on local officials' requests.

Recently, authorities said last month that six soldiers in Levallois, outside Paris, were hurt when a driver deliberately rammed into them. No one else was attacked or injured.
