Mnuchin defended that decision on Thursday, arguing the reason he even broached the idea was because he wanted to ensure he had a secure communications channel if he was needed while on vacation.

"Let me just set the record straight".

"I've never asked the government to pay for my personal travel, and this was purely about alternatives of how I'd be able to be involved for national security".

Mnuchin said the request was about national security, and "not about convenience".

Mnuchin's office denied he took that trip to watch the eclipse and said he was there to attend meetings on tax reform, and the Treasury Department said the Mnuchins would reimburse the government for Linton's travel costs.

Changes That Make Apple's New iTunes 12.7 Completely Different

"You know, people in Kentucky took this stuff very serious", Mnuchin told White. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) met with Mnuchin during that trip and tweeted a photo of them watching the eclipse together, complete with proper eyewear. He said he scrapped a staff plan to view it from the roof of a building at Fort Knox and instead looked at it briefly from the ground using a pair of eclipse glasses that someone handed him.

The controversy and coverage the comment generated led to further scrutiny of the trip to Louisville and Fort Knox on August 21.

Trump told reporters he had "total confidence" in Mnuchin.

I mention all of this so that, the next time anyone from this administration talks about the "culture of entitlement" that holds back poorer Americans, you can laugh in their face. That's the one that led his very bad wife Louise Linton to poor shame a mother of three on Instagram for calling out her touting of high-end fashion brands while ostensibly on government business, just like any hard-working American would do! In her post, Linton included hashtags of various luxury designers she was wearing, which prompted criticism from an OR mother of three who wrote "glad we could pay for your little getaway".

Last year, Ms Linton deleted her Twitter account after her memoir of a gap year spent in Zambia sparked outrage for including major factual inaccuracies.
