Hurricane Katia Brings Heavy Rain to Mexico a Day After Quake

Storm Katia rapidly weakens after making landfall in Mexico

In its 4 p.m. advisory, the National Hurricane Center said Katia now has maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour.

Katia is expected to remain offshore through most of Friday, then turn southwest and make landfall in Mexico on the coast of the southeastern state of Veracruz late Friday night.

Katia, located over Mexico, dissipated on September 9, 2017.

Hurricane Irma has had a maximum wind speed of 185 miles per hour in its lifetime, making this the first time for a storm like this to exist in the Atlantic.

Hurricane Jose continued to gather strength far out in the Atlantic and it was nearing Category 5 strength as it churned about 435 miles (700 km) east-southeast of the Northern Leeward Islands.

HURRICANE Jose was classed as a Category 4 storm and described as "extremely dangerous" as it followed in the path of the ruinous Irma. Isolated maximum amounts of 8 inches are possible.

NHC noted that unsafe storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 5 to 7 feet above normal tide levels near and to the north of where Katia makes landfall.

Where will Hurricane Jose and Hurricane Katia make landfall? Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.

Yunes said Saturday that there were no other reports of major damage, though he said some rivers had risen to near flood stage. "The previous record was [Typhoon] Haiyan in the [Northwest] Pacific at 24 hours".
