He did not give further details about the process.

Burma denies the Rohingya minority citizenship even though many have lived there for generations. "Myanmar did not keep their word in the past, they stopped cooperating with Bangladesh for their repatriation".

"Myanmar has proposed return of the Rohingya refugees", Ali told reports waiting out at the State Guest House Padma, where the meeting was also attended by Home Minister Asaduzzman Khan and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, and senior officials from the Prime Minister's Office, home ministry and foreign affairs ministry.

She has also called for a United Nations fact-finding mission to go to Myanmar and for the government to implement recommendations on solving problems in Rakhine drawn up by a team led by former United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan.

Rohingya refugees undertake a risky journey to safety to neighboring Bangladesh, either on foot or by boat.

Dhaka - Mounting global pressure has apparently compelled Myanmar to float a proposal for repatriation of the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims, who fled persecution in Myanmar to find shelters in neighbouring Bangladesh in the past weeks.

Children make up the bulk of new arrivals and are most vulnerable to the paucity of food, with 145,500 infants under five needing urgent intervention to stave off malnutrition, aid agencies say.

Myanmar has come under global criticism for barring aid groups, journalists and other outsiders from independently traveling to the region to see the situation there.

The diplomats' visit to Rakhine, which had been postponed last week because of heavy rain, took place as Rakhine State Police Chief Colonel Aung Myat Moe said security forces had received information about possible assaults by terrorists who may be plotting bomb and surprise attacks.

On a one-day visit organised by Myanmar authorities, United Nations officials, diplomats and aid groups were flown by helicopter to Maungdaw, epicentre of the violence.

Scores of Rohingya villages have been torched.
