Andrew Cuomo signed a new law Monday adding electronic cigarettes to the Clean Indoor Air Act - making them illegal anywhere tobacco cigarettes are already barred. This summer, the State Assembly added e-cigarettes to the state's Clean Indoor Air Act, and the measure was passed by the Senate.

The New York ban goes into effect in 30 days and will ban vaping in restaurants, bars, offices and parks, among other common areas, the New York Times reports The statewide ban comes four years after New York City prohibited the devices.
"Including e-cigarettes in New York's Clean Indoor Air law will protect the health of our children and our hospitality workers", said Julie Hart, director of NY government relations for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.
But proponents of devices like e-cigs and vaporizers - larger, cellphone-size gadgets - say they are a safer alternative to cigarettes and may help with smoking cessation.
"Our customers they know that they can't be walking through a store vaping, or sitting at a bar vaping", said Aman Singh, owner of Long Island Vape in Huntington Station, N.Y. "They don't feel like doing it anyway because its obnoxious". He said he has spoken to physicians who encourage smokers to switch to the products to reduce their risk of illness. "I think people will start smoking cigarettes again".
