He was limited to working five games for the Stars last season. Prior to joining the Stars, he called games for NBCSN and the NBC Sports Group.
The entire Detroit #RedWings organization is saddened to learn of the passing of Dave Strader.
Strader was one of the best-known American broadcasters in all of hockey and had been doing so for 38 years.
Stars president and CEO Jim Lites says Strader's "voice is synonymous with hockey to fans all over the globe and he built a connection for so many fans to this game". The Glens Falls native reached the height of the broadcasting profession, calling National Hockey League games for 4 different franchises and for media giants ESPN and NBC. He also worked the 2012 Summer Olympics in London as the basketball play-by-play announcer. "The Voice" was a true professional and a friend to many. Strader went on to join the elite likes of Mike "Doc" Emrick, Bob Miller, and the late Gene Hart, among others, as the most honored and iconic voices of our beloved game.

The longest stint of Strader's career was spent with the Detroit Red Wings, literally promoted from the minors in Adirondack (where he called games for seven seasons) to their broadcast booth in 1985. In April of 2017, it was announced that Strader had won the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award and would be recognized by the Hockey Hall of Fame in November.
Strader received support from the Stars, who wore a microphone sticker with "DS" on it affixed to their helmets; fellow broadcasters around the league pinned the same logo to their lapels.
Strader is survived by wife Colleen; son Christopher, daughter-in-law Karen and granddaughter Sydney; son Casey, daughter-in-law Mary and grandson Charles; and son Trevor.
