Amazon Web Services now dominates the market for cloud-based infrastructure services, while Microsoft's Azure occupies the number-two position, according to recent figures from the Synergy Research Group.

The deal gives Cisco a seamless bridge to next-generation public cloud technologies like the Kubernetes container orchestration platform.

However, that is the direction many enterprises are going.

The hybrid cloud is seen as a safe option for many enterprises wishing to start on the road to a cloud-native strategy, and Google's tie-up with Cisco may help to make its public cloud more amenable to enterprise customers.

The solution delivers cloud speed and scale, with enterprise-class security. For example, Microsoft a year ago announced its Azure Stack private cloud solution.

Google Cloud and Cisco announced a hybrid cloud partnership today to let developers run projects across cloud and on-premise environments. This will allow firms to optimise their existing investments, plan their cloud migration at their own pace and avoid vendor lock in. It also will give them the flexibility to decide which workloads to run on the public cloud and which to leave behind the firewall, and to move those workloads between the two as necessary.

Cisco technology is already on-premises for many businesses, and this partnership ensures that Google's cloud service portfolio can reach and easily be used by all of them. All of this could help it gain traction against its larger cloud rivals. "We share a common vision of a hybrid cloud world that delivers the speed of innovation in an open and secure environment to bring the right solutions to our customers".

For its part, Cisco gets another shot at the public and hybrid cloud after essentially shutting down its multi-year billion-dollar InterCloud effort late last year.

"This partnership to enhance existing on-premises infrastructure and extend it to the cloud addresses tough operational problems that enterprises have traditionally struggled to solve", Boden wrote today on the Google blog.

"Our data also shows 48% of infrastructure decision-makers expect to use public cloud platforms by the end of 2017", said Forrester.

The offering will become available in the second half of 2018 and will allow developers to combine Google Cloud services with Cisco's on-premises networking, hyper-converged infrastructure, and security offerings.

At the heart of this architecture are open source platforms, Kubernetes and Istio. "This partnership enables developers and IT departments to seamlessly take advantage of the most open, secure tools for building modern applications in a hybrid environment". In addition, developers using Google Cloud have access to a wealth of information, tools, and documentation from the innovator in container management and Kubernetes.

The new service is created to help organizations develop, deploy, and manage applications seamlessly and consistently, whether they're based on premises or in the cloud. Software components from Cisco will be licensed on an annual subscription basis that include one-, three- and five-year terms and the infrastructure sold on a perpetual basis.
