Mother who refused to vaccinate son gets 7 days behind bars

Metro Detroit mom could be thrown behind bars for not getting son vaccinated

A MI judge sentenced Rebecca Bredow to seven days in jail after she violated a court order to have her 9-year-old son vaccinated.

However, Bredow fell foul of the law because she had reneged on agreements with her former spouse, which dated back to November 2016.

Bredow, from the Detroit suburb of Ferndale, said in court on Wednesday: "I am an educated vaccine-choice mother".

She claimed that immunising her son would "go against my beliefs", adding: 'I would rather sit behind bars standing up for what I believe in, than giving in to something I strongly don't believe in'.

She had a court hearing Wednesday morning in Oakland County Circuit Court, and had not yet followed through with the vaccination. Last week, the judge warned Bredow she'd be sent to jail if she didn't comply within seven days - and that her son would be vaccinated anyway. "I understand you love your children, but what I don't think you understand is that your son has two parents and dad gets a say".

The judge said Bredow has a history of making child-rearing decisions without consent from her ex-husband. If she did not comply with the order, she would be thrown in jail.

Bredow was given one week to get her son vaccinated, but refused citing her beliefs. "You recognize in your own pleadings your youngster, at a year old, was cutting-edge on the greater part of his inoculations", the judge said.

Also, the record, I ask you to audit it and what you recently stated, that he has a freshly discovered protest isn't valid.

"It's clear to me that you don't care about orders, even if you agree to them, which you did". "Your attorney signed that order".

Bredow will serve seven days in jail for contempt.
