Pakistan said Thursday its influence over the Taliban has diminished since a USA drone strike killed the militant group's leader a year ago, derailing talks aimed at bringing peace to Afghanistan. He stressed that it should be called an act of terror.

He stated this while addressing at the US Institute of Peace in Washington Thursday.

He said achieving peace and security in Afghanistan was critical for lasting peace in the region.

Major General Asif Ghafoor said that more than 200,000 Pakistan army personnel are deployed on western border while over 100,000 personnel on eastern border.

"Ensuring security in Afghanistan is critical for the [South Asian] region", he remarked, adding "we will be the biggest beneficiary of peace in Afghanistan". "This is more than half of our life as an independent country".

Islamabad, Oct 5 Pakistan Army said today that India posed a "perpetual threat" to the country which has made its eastern border "unsafe".

It is a matter of bitter record that Pakistan and United States of America despite being decades' old allies never had friendly/cordial relations which had unfortunately been further deteriorated and tensed following the recent outburst of the American President against Islamabad in an uncalled for manner during his South Asia Policy review.

Asif Ghafoor further said that India's regional hegemonic agenda hampers our anti-terrorist operations due to successive perpetual ceasefire violations.

Pakistan on Thursday rejected recent remarks by senior USA officials that Pakistan security agencies have links with the Afghan armed groups and that there are sanctuaries of terrorists in Pakistan.

Asif also spoke about the plight of people in Kashmir during his address.

"This is about the importance of Pakistan and Pakistan's long-term stability as well".

"We have concerns about the future of Pakistan's government too, in terms of them - we want their government to be stable".

Asif, who is now visiting Washington for a three-day tour, met with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Wednesday.

He informed the Secretary of State with regard to the strong public reaction in Pakistan to the pronouncement of US Administration's South Asia Policy - based on inadequate recognition of Pakistan's sterling contribution in the fight against terrorism.

"I can not be more diplomatic", he said, adding that "relationship with India is at its lowest ebb at the moment".
