Possible Terrorism In Canada As Officer Stabbed And Pedestrians Struck

Man with Islamic State flag plows car, U-Haul van into Canadian cop and pedestrians during rampage

Pedestrians struck after high-speed chase down busy Jasper Avenue, witnesses say

The suspect fled the scene and deliberately attempted to hit pedestrians as police pursued him through downtown Edmonton, sending at least four people to the hospital with injuries, Knecht said.

The suspect fled the stop, leading police on a chase through Edmonton as the driver "intentionally swerved" at pedestrians in crosswalks, hitting four of them.

The suspect's vehicle struck the officer, "sending him flying 15 feet through the air", police said.

There was an ISIS flag in the auto, which has been seized as evidence, the police chief said.

"Based on evidence at the scenes and the actions of the suspect.it was determined that these incidents are being investigated as acts of terrorism", Knecht said.

Police launched a manhunt for the suspect. The impact sent the officer "flying 15 feet through the air", according to a Police statement.

"It's not critical", Mr Knecht said of the officer's injuries, adding he did not know the extent of the pedestrian injuries.

Police said the stabbed officer was manning a traffic checkpoint near 93 Street and 107A Avenue when it happened at around 8.15pm local time.

The U-Haul flipped in the downtown core along Jasper Avenue leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Construction begins on eight prototypes for wall along the US-Mexico border
Tuesday's groundbreaking is Trump's most tangible step yet toward making good on his signature campaign promise to build the wall. For many, the construction of these prototypes is nothing more than political banter.

Knecht said the investigation was in the early stages, and urged Edmontonians to contact police if they see or hear anything suspicious.

Officers caused the van to flip and cracked open the windshield to pull the suspect out, police and witnesses said.

Both the Edmonton Police Service and the RCMP are working on the case through the Integrated National Enforcement Team.

Austin Elgie, manager of The Pint bar just west of the downtown core, saw the van zoom by with police giving chase. Pictures in the Canadian media showed the U-Haul on its side with the front window shattered.

It "peeled" into an alley where people were smoking, he said.

The vehicle then struck the officer "suddenly and without notice" while he stood next to his cruiser, Edmonton Chief of Police Rod Knecht told reporters early Sunday.

"We now believe that this individual acted alone", he said.

After that incident, police broadcast the name of the Chevrolet's registered owner to patrol officers in the city.

One complication, although it appeared to transpire without incident, was the thousands of fans exiting Commonwealth Stadium after the Eskimos game very near the first crime scene.
