US Senate Committee Agrees Russia Meddled In Election, Still Probing Collusion

Report: Russian-linked Facebook ads targeted Wisconsin in the 2016 campaign

How did Russia know to exploit race on FB

The chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee said Wednesday that Russia's activities on social media were "indiscriminate" and did not favor either side of the political spectrum. "If we believe that you have something valuable to bring to the committee, if you don't voluntarily do it, I will assure you today you will be compelled to do it".

Burr - along with Virginia Democratic Sen.

"The committee can not really understand the credibility of the dossier without understanding who paid for it and who were your sources and sub-sources", Burr said. "I'm not going to even discuss initial findings because we haven't any", Burr said. "If we use exclusively the social media advertising that we've seen, there is no way that you can look at that and say that that was to help the right side of the ideological chart and not the left, or vice versa", North Carolina Sen.

The FBI has also reportedly used some materials from the dossier in its successful request for a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant to conduct surveillance on Trump personal friend and associate Carter Page.

"We have interviewed everybody who had a hand or a voice in the creation of the intelligence community assessment", he said.

In a noteworthy aside, Burr also suggested that Senate investigators had corroborated some parts of a dossier written by a former British intelligence agent that makes damaging allegations against President Trump and his campaign.

However, Burr said the committee had come to a conclusion on at least one issue: that it had faith in the conclusions of the intelligence community assessment (ICA) presented by the CIA, FBI and NSA to Barack Obama and Donald Trump in January.

The lawmakers said that though they have reached no conclusion about whether the campaign colluded with the Kremlin - the question also at the heart of a separate criminal investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller - their investigation has left no doubt about a multi-pronged Russian effort to meddle in American politics.

There are several public hearings on the horizon.

The comments came as the pair updated reporters on the probe into Russian attempts to influence the 2016 election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

Washington has accused Russian Federation of meddling in the November 8 election, with USA congressional investigators launching a probe into alleged interference. CNN has confirmed that states targeted included Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin.

The Senate panel has also been focused on Russian efforts to push out social media messages on Twitter and Facebook, and is examining more than 3,000 Russia-linked ads that Facebook turned over to Congress this week.

Facebook has handed over 3,000 ads that are believed to have been linked to a shadowy Russian entity called the Internet Research Agency, and Facebook staff have been interviewed by committee staff.
