Marblehead's Flanagan is first US woman to win NYC marathon in 40 years

American Shalane Flanagan and Kenya's Geoffrey Kamworor won women's and men's titles apiece at the 2017 New York Marathon on Sunday.

Flanagan's final time of 2:26:53 was nearly a full minute ahead of Keitany's, who finished with 2:27:54.

Compatriot Manuela Schar, three times a runner-up in NY, beat five-time victor Tatyana McFadden by almost three minutes to win the women's wheelchair race in 1:48.09. Flanagan, 36, is the American record holder in the indoor 3,000 meters, the indoor 5,000 and won a bronze medal that was upgraded to silver in the 10,000 in the 2008 Olympics.

The race was held amid heightened security after a terror attack that killed eight people on a popular bike path in Manhattan last week.

Only one other women's race runner - Norway's Grete Waitz - can claim that achievement, with five consecutive wins. "This is my first marathon victory".
