An American woman just made history at the annual NYC Marathon
American Shalane Flanagan and Kenya's Geoffrey Kamworor won women's and men's titles apiece at the 2017 New York Marathon on Sunday.
Flanagan's final time of 2:26:53 was nearly a full minute ahead of Keitany's, who finished with 2:27:54.
Compatriot Manuela Schar, three times a runner-up in NY, beat five-time victor Tatyana McFadden by almost three minutes to win the women's wheelchair race in 1:48.09. Flanagan, 36, is the American record holder in the indoor 3,000 meters, the indoor 5,000 and won a bronze medal that was upgraded to silver in the 10,000 in the 2008 Olympics.
Manuela Schaer stunned five-times champion Tatyana McFadden in the women's race, defeating the American by nearly three minutes in 1:48.09.
After taking the lead in the 23rd mile, the 24-year-old 2015 NY runner-up had to contend with Kipsang, whose final push brought him ever so close to his countryman.
Flanagan, a four-time Olympian, completed the women's event with a time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, 53 seconds, according to USA Today, defeating Kenyan competitor Mary Keitany, who came in second to Flanagan after winning the New York City Marathon for the past three years.
In the wheelchair event, the Swiss dominated with Manuela Schar tops among women and Marcel Hug finishing first among the men. Kipsang settled for the second place at 2:10:56.
