Escaped Mental Patient From Hawaii Arrested In Stockton

A serial killer escaped a state psychiatric hospital in Hawaii and boarded a flight to the Bay Area

Randall Saito escaped from the Hawaii State Hospital in Kaneohe on November 12, 2017.Randall Saito is seen in a taxi in Kaneohe, Hawaii, on November 12, 2017.

A prosecutor in Hawaii who has dealt with Saito in the past, issued a warning.

Hawaii authorities are searching for a man who escaped from the state's psychiatric hospital outside Honolulu and flew to Maui.

Honolulu Police say Saito escaped from the hospital around 9am Sunday. She said the man fit the description of Saito.

Because of the nature of Yamashiro's death, "We still consider (Saito) a high risk of danger even though it's been 30 years since the crime was committed", he told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser today.

Randall Saito, who is considered extremely unsafe, was detained near Stockton after a cab driver tipped off officers, San Joaquin Sheriff spokesman Dave Konecny said.

A man acquitted of murder who escaped from a Hawaii psychiatric hospital and flew to California was recaptured without incident late Wednesday, police said. He was taken into custody in San Joaquin County, Calif. after a four-day manhunt. The agency posted a photo on social media showing Saito surrounded by three deputies at a gas station.

Saito was sent to the hospital in 1981 after acknowledging he shot Sandra Yamashiro with a pellet gun and then repeatedly stabbed her in her auto, which was parked at a shopping mall, according to court records. Police said he boarded a plane to Maui. Honolulu police then forwarded that information to authorities in Stockton.

Saito is 6 feet tall with black hair and brown eyes.

Saito walked away from the State Hospital in Kaneohe on Sunday morning, got into a waiting cab and boarded the charter plane to Maui. There, he got on an airliner and arrived in San Jose, California, arriving two hours before the hospital reported him missing.

Later that night, Hamman saw a news report about escaped mental patient Randall Saito, who was acquitted of a brutal 1979 murder by reason of insanity and committed to the Hawaii State Hospital.

Saito has been charged with felony escape, and the attorney general said the breakout was not planned by someone suffering from a "mental defect".

Dr. Virginia Pressler, director of the Hawaii Department of Health, said an internal inquiry indicated that workers inadvertently or intentionally neglected to supervise Randall Saito and notify their supervisors. "He's a very unsafe individual with respect to whom all the predictors indicate that if he were to be released, he would kill again". Police wouldn't provide details about his flight to California. That flight landed about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Hawaii State Hospital Administrator William May said officials are fully cooperating with law enforcement and appropriate steps would be taken if Saito had help from someone inside the facility. Tashima is concerned that Saito could commit the same "very heinous and violent offense" again.
