Drinking gin really does make you sad: Study discovers how spirits affect your emotions

Spirits make you feel&hellip
energised and confident

Wine and beer, on the other hand, makes you feel relaxed. Nearly one in three (30 per cent) spirit drinkers found that it made them more aggressive, compared to just 2.5 per cent of red or white wine drinkers and 7 per cent of beer drinkers saying the same.

The survey asked about beer, hard liquor (or spirits), and red and white wine.

Out of all the types of alcohol included in the survey, spirits were found to bring about the most negative effects on its consumers.

If you want to chill out, fill your glass with red wine; at 52.8 percent, it landed the highest rate of reporting for feeling relaxed out of any of the other options.

Meanwhile, red wine (53 per cent) and beer (50 per cent) were found to be the most relaxing alcoholic drinks.

Professor Mark Bellis, Public Health Wales' director of policy, research and global development, says we should pay extra attention to spirits, which are associated with a rich history of violence.

A group of British psychologists conducted a study on the relationship between the type of alcoholic beverage and the resulting emotions. "This can result in a quicker stimulating effect as blood alcohol levels increase", he explained.

Reminding people of the emotional downsides of alcohol use through public-health campaigns could help curb problem drinking, he said, "so that people are not overly swayed by just the positive messages, which perhaps they watch or listen to every day". The researchers found that women were more likely than men to associate most types of positive and negative emotions with drinking alcohol of any type.

Confidence and sexiness make up the middle ground here; 27.88 percent reported feeling confident and 25.20 percent reported feeling sexy. This was most striking with aggression - those who showed signs of alcohol dependence were six times more likely to say they felt aggression while drinking (adjusted odds ratio 6.41, 95% CI 5.79 to 7.09).

It's the biggest study to ever document how people react to alcohol, mood-wise. Negative feelings such as aggression (30%), restlessness (28%) and tearfulness (22%) give significant cause for concern.

It is worth also bearing in mind that there are compounds apart from alcohol in different drinks. For example, they were five times more likely to feel energized after imbibing than were people without a drinking problem.

RG: Were there differences between men and women? . "As people get the kick from escalating alcohol levels, the same increases reduce the brain's ability to suppress impulsive feelings or to consider the consequences of acting on them". Factors including where alcohol is consumed were considered as important factors.

Krakower, though, doesn't think that will help folks who are dependent on alcohol.

The social situation in which people drink and the expectations they have when they choose a drink are also likely to affect their emotions.
