Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei addresses students in Tehran on Nov. 2

On November 4, 1979, and in less than a year after the victory of the Islamic Revolution that toppled a US-backed monarchy, Iranian university students who called themselves "students following the line of (the late) Imam (Khomeini)" seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran, which had become a center of espionage and planning to overthrow the newly established Islamic system in Iran.

The vote came two weeks after US President Donald Trump's decision to decertify the Iranian nuclear deal, as part of Washington's efforts to toughen its policy toward Iran without undermining the agreement.

A crowd chanted "Down with the U.S." and "Death to Israel" during the anniversary celebration. Still, the Europeans share USA concern over Iran's ballistic missile program and "destabilizing" regional behavior.

Shamkhani also noted that the countries that have supported the US's anti-Iran stance over the past years were themselves at a loss.

According to Tasnim news agency, as a sign of defiance, a Ghadr ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 kilometers was put on display near the ex-US embassy in Tehran, which is now a cultural center, during Saturday's street demonstration.

In 1979, 38 years ago today, the USA embassy in Iran was overrun by student demonstrators who supported Iran's Islamic revolution. They also burned flags of both the USA and Israel as well as an effigy of president Donald Trump.

Trump's administration has taken a tougher line with Iran, threatening to tear up an worldwide accord on its nuclear programme.

Speaking about the students who stormed the US embassy, Iran's former chief delegate to the United Nations, Rajaie-Khorassani said, "I don't know if the intention of these boys is to prevent any movement toward the United States, but it is one of the inevitable consequences".

Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the country's Supreme National Security Council, addressed the crowd, saying Iran will make any sanctions imposed by the U.S. He called the U.S. the "eternal enemy" of Iran. The U.S. cut its diplomatic relations with Iran after the embassy takeover and has had no diplomatic relations since. Many Iranians call it the "den of spies".
