The United States and South Korea on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, started joint naval exercises that will involve three US aircraft carriers in what military officials describe as a clear warning to North Korea.

The US Navy said yesterday that the three vessels - the USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt - will conduct "coordinated operations in global waters" in the western Pacific between Saturday and Tuesday.

This will be the first time the three USA aircraft carriers will conduct an exercise in the area since 2007.

The JCS said in a statement that the exercise was seeking to strengthen and expand the dissuasive strategy to prevent Pyongyang from carrying out further provocations in the form of arms tests.

The exercise is taking place while U.S. President Donald Trump is on an Asian tour and presenting a united front with regional leaders.

The Korean side will mobilize seven vessels including two Aegis ships.

"The participating forces of the two nations plan to enhance combined operation capability and interoperability through aircraft carrier escort operation, aviation operation and aerial firing", said the JCS.

Show of force coincides with US President Trump's visit to AsiaThis weekend, three American aircraft carriers will be carrying out joint exercises in the waters around the Korean Peninsula.

This is the first time that three American aircraft carriers have conducted joint maneuvers in the western Pacific since 2007. "Multiple carrier strike force operations are very complex, and this exercise in the western Pacific is a strong testament to the US Pacific Fleet's unique ability and ironclad commitment to the continued security and stability of the region".

Yonhap said the three aircraft carriers will enter the KTO one by one as the strike groups sail with a certain distance from each other.

Trump had also delivered a sharp warning to North Korea in a speech at South Korea's parliament on Wednesday, telling the country: "Do not underestimate us".

It has repeatedly threatened to launch ballistic missiles into the waters around the USA territory of Guam.
