Striking at a mosque would be a change in tactics for the Sinai militants, who have usually attacked troops and police and Christian churches.

On Friday Morning, a massive explosion in Al-Rawada mosque, located in the town of Beer El Abed, in North Sinai's Al-Arish. When they did so, they came under attack by gunmen.

Dozens were injured and killed in Sinai during one of the country's deadliest attacks in recent memory, state media and eyewitnesses said.

El-Sisi said that the military and police "will avenge our martyrs" and will respond "using brute force against those fragments of terrorists" in the coming period to ensure stability and security.

President Donald Trump, in a tweet, called the attack "horrible and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent and defenseless worshipers in Egypt".

"The world can not tolerate terrorism, we must defeat them militarily and discredit the extremist ideology that forms the basis of their existence!" the president said. Our strength & resolve will overpower their extremist ideology. Egypt's presidency announced three days of mourning following the attack.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but since 2013 Egyptian security forces have battled a stubborn Islamic State affiliate in the mainly desert region, and militants have killed hundreds of police and soldiers.
