Qualcomm sues Apple again, this time saying it shared info with Intel

03 November 2017, 01:09 | Hattie Nash

Apple fired the first salvo in the prolonged legal battle this past January when it filed suit over what it claimed were unfair royalties required by Qualcomm.

According to Bloomberg, the new suit alleges that Apple refuses to allow Qualcomm to audit Apple's handling of the chipmaker's proprietary software, something the company says is in the current contract. Apple copied an Intel engineer in the email for information, Qualcomm alleged. Qualcomm accused Apple of throwing its weight around to get a bargain then asked a court to block iPhone sales. That same month, Apple's contract manufacturers joined its countersuit against Qualcomm saying the lawsuit against them is "yet another chapter of Qualcomm's anticompetitive scheme to dominate modem chip markets, extract supracompetitive royalties, and break its commitments to license its cellular technology on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms". But, recent news reports from The Wall Street Journal suggest Apple are designing products which don't require Qualcomm components, which would free Apple from Qualcomm's influence.

Qualcomm fires back at Apple supporters.

It's already attempted to in the past, as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus carried both Intel and Qualcomm chips, as did this year's iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

In contrast, revenue from Qualcomm's licensing business fell 36 percent to $1.21 billion in the quarter ended September 24.

Qualcomm's fight with Apple has taken another turn, as the company has filed yet another lawsuit.

The two companies are embroiled in a worsening dispute over technology licensing fees that Qualcomm charges for patents that cover the basics of how mobile phone systems work.
