Sessions denies being influenced by Trump to investigate Hillary Clinton

Justice Department Confirms Prosecutors Are "Evaluating" Claims Raised Against Hillary Clinton

Under fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions will be pressed Tuesday in a House Judiciary Committee hearing over what he knew about contacts between the Trump election campaign last year and Russia

Asked about his reported conversations with foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, who met with Russian intermediaries in Europe, Sessions said he didn't initially recall a meeting in March 2016 where Papadopoulos suggested a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Sessions came under fire last month after a former campaign advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump, George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to misleading investigators about his involvement with Russian Federation.

Sessions said at the hearing on Tuesday that he forgot about the March 2016 meeting because the Trump campaign was "a form of chaos" from the beginning.

However, Sessions said he would not acknowledge if he will recuse himself from any probe regarding Clinton, despite earlier pledges to do just that given his high-profile role in the Trump campaign.

USA intelligence agencies have concluded that Moscow meddled in the 2016 election to help Republican Trump's campaign.

Conyers repeated the question, and Sessions replied, "I would say that the Department of Justice can never be used to retaliate politically against opponents".

Accusations of collusion with Russian Federation during the election campaign have dogged Trump's first 10 months in office, setting off an investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and several congressional probes. "We do our duty everyday based on the facts".

Testimony before Congress has proved to be something of a thorn in Sessions's side.

Goodlatte said in his opening remarks that he felt Sessions had generally done a good job in his first nine months as attorney general, though he noted his tenure had "not been without difficulty".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is sworn-in prior to testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill June 13, 2017 in Washington, DC.

Jeff Sessions's memory works in mysterious ways. "I have always told the truth, and I have answered every question as I understood them and to the best of my recollection, as I will continue to do today ..."

Meanwhile, the Senate Judiciary Committee is planning a Tuesday interview with a Russian-American lobbyist who attended a campaign meeting past year with Trump's son, according to a person familiar with the interview.

"But I will not accept and reject accusations that I have ever lied under oath".

"These senior prosecutors will report directly to the attorney general and the deputy attorney general, as appropriate, and will make recommendations as to whether any matters not now under investigation should be opened, whether any matters now under investigation require further resources, or whether any matters merit a special counsel", Boyd wrote. "Is it proper, is that what you're asking?"

From Republicans, Sessions is likely to face inquiries on a host of matters they want investigated - including alleged wrongdoing by the Clinton Foundation and the controversial sale of a uranium company to Russian Federation.

Prosecutors will "evaluate certain issues" surrounding the foundation and make recommendations on possible investigative steps - including the appointment of a special counsel, Stephen E. Boyd, assistant attorney general, wrote in a two-page letter to Rep. Robert W. Goodlatte, R-Va., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Mr. Mueller was the F.B.I. director at the time.
