Fidget spinners are supposed to be calming and fun, especially for students struggling to focus.

The U.S. PIRG said it sent representatives to five Target stores across the country who found the spinners being sold in the toy department, according to The Washington Post.

Lab tests conducted by the PIRG Education fund found that lead levels in two of Target's fidget spinner products were dangerously high. As of Wednesday, the fidget spinners were still being sold online, and the retailer had not made any indication it would pull the item from stores.

Lead poisoning is most risky for young children.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission said that fidget spinners are general use products, not children's products; They only consider a fidget spinner a toy if it is labeled for ages 12 or under, according to MASSPIRG.

"Saying fidget spinners aren't toys defies common sense, as millions of parents whose kids play with spinners can tell you,"said Kara Cook-Schultz, toxics director for U.S. PIRG".

PIRG has listed the two spinners on their website as unsafe and has even started a petition to get the toys removed from stores. So, while one of their fidget spinners may be marketed to "14 and up" kids, it doesn't mean anything if they're being sold alongside LEGO playsets and Barbie dolls. Henderson noted that their product safety team reviewed the findings and determined that the products were safe to stay on the shelves. The organization argues that the two fidget spinners are marketed towards children.

CoPIRG is calling for an investigation into how these toys ended up with such high levels of lead, and wants Target to address the problem and ensure that no other fidget spinners have similarly high levels.

While U.S. PIRG notified the CPSC, the agency held firm that the fidget spinners are not toys. "The buck has to stop with someone". "All of our product are tested and comply with [Consumer Product Safety Commission] safety standards". Now is the time for it to stand up for consumers. "We can't sit idly by while children play with these toxic toys - and yes, these are toys".
