The USS Ronald Reagan and two other carriers will conduct drills during Donald Trump's Asia visit

The exercises, which will run from Saturday through Tuesday, will involve the Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture-based USS Ronald Reagan as well as the USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt strike groups.

These opportunities typically come about when the strikes groups deployed to the 7th Fleet area of operations from the West Coast of the U.S. are coupled with the forward deployed carrier strike group from Japan, said the report on the official website of the Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet.

Since taking office, Trump has vowed to expand the fleet of USA carriers, even as some military strategists and experts believe the massive ships would be increasingly vulnerable to modern Chinese and Russian weapons in any conflict.

During the drill, the first of its kind in a decade, the warships will carry out air strike and defense simulations, maritime surveillance, sea supply, coordinated fenced maneuvers and other training, added the Navy.

The Navy noted that for more than 70 years, the U.S. Pacific Fleet has been a persistent and stabilizing presence conducting operations throughout the region. Both exercises focused on the ability to rapidly bring together forces from three strike groups in response to any regional situation, the navy said. Ronald Reagan took part in Valiant Shield 2006 and Nimitz took part in Valiant Shield 2007.

Iranians Commemorate 1979 US Embassy Takeover

Three U.S. aircraft carrier strike groups now converged near South Korea will kick off a rare four-day exercise in the Western Pacific on Saturday as U.S. President Donald Trump tours Asia.

The CIA has said North Korea could be only months away from developing the ability to hit the United States with nuclear weapons, a scenario Trump has vowed to prevent.

North Korea will be at the top of the agenda as Trump tries to pressure Beijing into cracking down on Pyongyang.

North Korea, which sees any military drills near its country as a rehearsal for invasion, has not responded to the news of the drills yet, nor has it reacted to any of Trump's remarks during his time in Japan, South Korea and China. Kim has called Trump a "mentally deranged USA dotard".

Given the close geographical proximity and longstanding diplomatic ties, war with North Korea would nearly inevitably lead to war with China, another nuclear armed state.
