Russian jet makes 'unsafe' intercept of US Navy aircraft

Baldanza said the Russian jet's movements were deemed unsafe because it forced the Navy plane to enter its jet wash, which caused it to experience "a 15-degree roll and violent turbulence".

Lt. Col. Michelle Baldanza told the outlet that a Russian Su-30 intercepted a U.S. P-8A Poseidon aircraft over the Black Sea by crossing in front of it from right to left while engaging its afterburners.

The unprofessional behavior demonstrated by the Russian pilot was clearly intentional, according to US officials. The incident reportedly lasted 24 minutes.

This isn't the first hairy encounter between USA and Russian aircrafts.

A US Navy P-8A Poseidon anti-submarine warfare aircraft was intercepted by a Russian Air Force Su-30 Flanker fighter jet on November 25.

"The Russian military is within its right to exercise within global airspace, but they must respect worldwide standards set to ensure safety and prevent incidents", Baldanza said.

"After being identified by a Russian fighter, the USA reconnaissance plane changed its route and set course away from Russia's airspace", TASS reported, citing the Russian military. A spokesperson at the US Air Force said in a statement at the time that, "there are global standards to ensure safety and prevent incidents".

The Russian Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jet reportedly crossed in front of the U.S. P-8A Poseidon aircraft on November 25, flying as close as 50 feet, and turned on its afterburners, Lt. Col. Michelle Baldanza, a Pentagon spokeswoman, told CNN.
