The New York City police department on Monday confirmed reports of an explosion of an unknown origin near Times Square
The man suspected of trying to bomb New York City's main bus terminal is 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, according to New York City Police Commissioner James O'Neill. Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed the incident was an act of terrorism. "Thank God the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goal".
He said there were no further credible threats against the city and the device was "an amateur level explosive device".
- Ullah is in custody and is now at Bellevue Hospital.
What happened during the attack?
The Port Authority issued a tweet saying, "The Port Authority Bus Terminal is open".
A video released on Twitter shows a puff of smoke erupting amid a stream of commuters.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, speaking at a news conference near the site, described the device as "amateur level".
He was wearing an "improvised, low-tech, explosive device attached to his body", which he detonated intentionally, Mr O'Neill said.
Ullah, originally from Bangladesh, had most recently been living in Brooklyn.
"Trump you failed to protect your nation", Ullah said on Facebook before the attack.

"As taxi and for-hire vehicle drivers are independent contractors and not employees, I have no way of knowing whether he drove for any particular base, or whether he simply got the license but didn't drive at all", Fromberg said.
"All we could hear was the chaos", she said.
Akayed Ullah was taken into custody on Sunday.
Ullah has lived in the USA for seven years and entered the country on an F43 family immigrant visa.
Sources say Ullah told investigators he was inspired to strike by the terror group ISIS, but authorities were working to determine whether he had any direct connection with the group. No injuries other than suspect at this time.
Alicja Wlodkowski, 51, said she was inside a restaurant at the Port Authority when she saw a crowd of people running.
"The A, C and E line are being evacuated at this time".
Speaking on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton, said the suspect "supposedly was setting the device off in the name of ISIS, so definitely a terrorist attack, definitely intended".
This is a developing story and we will continue to update this post throughout the day with more information. Service will resume. Let's go back to work.
