WorldMarriage Equality Will Become Legal in Austria by 2019 Thanks to a Recent Court Ruling Written by Daniel Villarreal

Austria marriage equality

The country has allowed same-sex couples to enter into legal partnerships since 2010, but the court has now ruled that the existing law is discriminatory and needs to be updated.

The idea behind the law was to minimize discrimination against same-sex couples, while continuing to restrict civil marriage to different-sex couples. But we're sure it'll come around in the blink of an eye!

The case was heard after a female couple challenged a 2009 law which allowed registered partnerships for same-sex couples, but not marriage. It's a refreshingly inclusive judgment'.

Lawyer Helmut Graupner, who represented the couple, praised the ruling on social media.

With the ruling, Austria becomes the 16th European country to grant marriage equality.

In its ruling, the high court noted that civil partnerships, which began for gay couples in 2010, include numerous same rights and responsibilities of marriage, including adoption.

Pep Guardiola: Man City manager regrets Nathan Redmond outburst
Redmond has since played down the incident, stating there was nothing aggressive or offensive in what Guardiola said to him. Asked if he had spoken to Redmond about the incident or reviewed it on video, Pellegrino replied: "No, no".

The Austrian People's Party - whose leader, Sebastian Kurz, won a general election in October and is expected to be sworn in as chancellor in the coming weeks - said it would accept the ruling.

They continued: "Because the separation into two legal institutions expresses that people with same-sex sexual orientation are not the same people with different sexual orientation".

"We are very happy", said The Homosexual Initiative Vienna (HOSI) chairman Christian Hoegl.

Civil partnerships will still remain an option for same-sex couples, but will now be made available to heterosexual couples as well, in an attempt to provide equality across the board.

In Germany, women and men are allowed to Wednesday to a same-sex partner since October.

Austria's neighbour Germany voted to legalise same-sex marriage earlier in the year, despite chancellor Angela Merkel voting against it.
