BREAKING: Christmas market EVACUATED as 'bomb found' – armed police on scene
A Christmas market in Potsdam, Germany was evacuated after an explosive device was planted nearby.
The police said earlier on Twitter that "the suspicion of an improvised explosive device has been confirmed".
Local officers had already cordoned off the area around the suspicious object and requested assistance of specialist officers, the statement added.
The suspicious package was handed into a Potsdam pharmacy at about 2.30pm on Friday. A bomb disposal unit is now examining the suspicious package, the police said.
The Reuters agency cited the Potsdamer Neueste Nachrichten newspaper, which said the package was around 40 cm by 50 cm and contained wires and electronics. No additional details were immediately available.
Microsoft makes Office available to all compatible Chromebooks
For many people who needed Office for work or school and didn't care for Google's own versions of Office, this is great news. However, Microsoft had still not publicly given an updated time line for bringing its office Android apps to Chromebooks.
Police in the city of Potsdam said the package did not appear to include any parts for detonation, but wires and a firecracker without a fuse were found inside the cylindrical object.
Residents of the street were told to stay in the back of their homes while the procedure was carried out.
Christmas markets are extremely popular in Germany and have increased security this year following the deadly truck attack at a market in downtown Berlin last December.
On December 19th, 2016, a failed Tunisian asylum seeker and Islamic State sympathiser, Anis Amri (24), stole an articulated lorry and ploughed into booths in the market.
