Giants Acquire Evan Longoria From Rays in Blockbuster
21 December 2017, 01:09 | Percy Christensen
Prepare yourself for Evan Longoria, Giants third baseman, with an adorable Little League flashback
In exchange for Longoria the Giants will send Denard Span along with Christian Arroyo, Matt Krook and Stephen Woods to the Rays.
The truly scary number going forward, though, is Longoria's salary: He still has five years and $87 million to go on the six-year extension he signed all the way back in 2012-a deal that didn't kick in until his then-contract expired after the '16 season. It includes a team option for 2023 that could make the agreement worth $144.6 million over 11 years. He was the AL Rookie of the Year in 2008 and won three Gold Gloves.
Longoria had a.261/.313/.424 slash line in 2017, with 20 home runs, 86 RBI, and 71 runs scored over 613 at bats.
Span, 33, hit.272/.329/.427 with 12 home runs and 12 steals with the Giants last season.

USA blames North Korea for major cyber attack
Whenever possible, we will work with partners, industry and allied governments, who share our market based values. Late on Monday, the Trump administration officially cast blame for WannaCry on North Korea.
Longoria, who has spent his entire 10 year career with the Rays, was unsure of his future this off-season, according to Marc Topkin at the Tampa Bay Times.
"Evan has been one of the best third baseman in the game over the last decade and we are thrilled to add him to the organization", said Brian Sabean, Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations, in a statement. The Giants finished the season with Pablo Sandoval at third base; he batted.225 in 47 games. The Giants do have room to make moves even after adding Longoria's money, but they're right up against their limit and still have holes to fill in the outfield, rotation and bullpen.
Longoria leaves the club as the longest-tenured player in franchise history. Look for Arroyo to compete to be the Rays' starting second baseman this spring, as Adeiny Hechavarria and Willy Adames are ahead of him on the depth chart at shortstop.
Longoria, alone, remained. His longevity with a franchise that can't afford to place much value in roster continuity stemmed in part from a decision Longoria made less than a week after being called up to the majors. They may now be able to keep some of their other top players and continue to rebuild with a rather impressive farm system. Duffy can now take over the hot corner in Tampa Bay for years to come. With Longoria gone, expect Tampa to get aggressive about moving closer Alex Colome, starter Jake Odorizzi, and-most intriguing of all-staff ace Chris Archer.
