Indian Premier League franchises allowed to retain upto five players
The two returning franchises, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, will be able to retain up to five players who played for them in the 2015 edition, under the condition that they turned out for one of Rising Pune Supergiant or Gujarat Lions, the franchises that replaced Super Kings and Royals.
Former India Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's path to join the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad has been cleared after the IPL Governing Council on Wednesday allowed retention of maximum three players for the 2018 edition.
The franchise has not decided on which two other cricketers to retain. At least 75 percent of the salary cap will have to be spent during each season. A franchise, however, would be allowed to spend Rs 33 crore on retentions prior to the 2018 auction. CSK will have to primarily choose between R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina or a foreign player such as Dwayne Bravo in whom the Chennai team continues to have faith.
Two new teams, Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions squads were introduced to replace the suspended teams.
Guardiola sad to see Pogba miss Manchester derby
Even so, Wenger acknowledged Arsenal had only themselves to blame for a loss that effectively ended their title bid. "But I'm angry and disappointed because in the end we have nothing to show for it", Wenger told a news conference.
The IPL Governing Council hiked the salary budget of the franchises from ₹66 crore to ₹80 crore for next year's auction, tentatively set for February.
Franchises can play a maximum of three Right to Match options.
The five players secured can include any combination of retention and right-to-match cards with not more than three through either category.
Commenting on the fact that the team will get to pick the players from the 2015 IPL squad, the CSK director affirmed that they are not losing their head over it and are quite content with the rule. Moreover, if a franchise doesn't retain even a single player before the auction, they still can't use more than three RTMs. CSK and RR have the allowance to retain players from among those who played for them in the 2015 season and it is nearly certain that Dhoni will be back in CSK colours in the next season. However, in case it chooses to retain two players, Rs 21 crore will be deducted (Rs 12.5 crore and Rs 8.5 crore), while for retaining just one player, Rs 12.5 crore will be deducted from the auction purse.
