The U.S. has congratulated the people of Liberia on the successful conclusion of the presidential run-off election, and President-elect George Weah on his victory.

Addressing supporters in Monrovia, Boakai promised to provide support to Weah, but he also reminded him of Liberia's fragile economy and the challenges that lie ahead.

Liberia's elections board certified former global football star George Weah as the victor of the nation's presidential election.

Following a December 26 poll, Weah's Coalition for Democratic Change took 61.5 percent of the vote, beating Vice President Joseph Boakai's Unity Party, which got 38.5 percent.

As the election commission announced the final results, the city center in the capital Monrovia was overwhelmed by traffic congestion for several hours as supporters paraded through the streets heading to their party's headquarters.

Africa's first female president, Nobel Peace Prize victor Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, is stepping aside after two terms at the head of the nation founded by freed American slaves.

The tumultuous events of the past 70 years in Liberia, where an estimated 250,000 people died during back-to-back civil wars between 1989-2003, have prevented a democratic handover from taking place since 1944.

"Best wishes for the success of President-elect George Weah, and Vice President-elect, Jewel Taylor".

"I refuse to subject our nation to such an experience", he said.

The chairman of the Coalition for Democratic Change, Nathaniel McGill, told DW "the Liberian people have spoken, and it's a victory for Liberia".

The new president is expected to take office in January.

Though voter turnout for Tuesday's runoff was low, Weah drew support from the younger generation, which makes up a majority of Liberia's population of 4.6 million people.

In his victory speech, Weah said he wants to work with all Liberians, no matter their political affiliations, in order to move the country forward towards progress. The United Nations has helped to oversee past votes. "Change is on", Weah said on Twitter. Two presidents who served prior to Taylor were assassinated.
