Detmer was released from his duties as offensive coordinator on November 27 following the Cougar's disappointing 4-9 season. A native of Garland, Texas, Grimes, 49, has never been a coordinator in his college coaching career. It is still unknown if Detmer will have a role within the Cougar's offense for the 2018 season. Curtis Brown ran for back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons behind Grimes' unit and became the school's then all-time leading rusher in 2006 with 3,193 yards. LSU still finished fifth in the Southeastern Conference in rushing with 210 yards a game, and quarterback Danny Etling finished sixth in passing with 2,234 yards despite 25 sacks.

Grimes served as offensive line coach under head coach Gene Chizik for the next four years at Auburn.
While Grimes will remain with the LSU Tigers for their Citrus Bowl matchup against Notre Dame on January 1, 2018, he's likely already making calls and trying to assemble his new staff.
Grimes served one year under longtime coach Frank Beamer as the team's running game coordinator and offensive line coach. In 2001, four of his seniors were drafted into the National Football League, marking just the second time that had been done at any school since the National Football League adopted the seven-round draft format in 1993. He and his wife, Sheri, have four children.
