Nashville expected to be awarded MLS franchise at Wednesday announcement

21 December 2017, 01:14 | Melanie Burgess

A second expansion team will go to Cincinnati, Sacramento or Detroit.

Nashville is one of four cities that has been vying to earn one of the two MLS teams that are part of the upcoming expansion. In just two seasons as a franchise, the club is bringing in more fans a game than several MLS cities.

Surely MLS can add three teams right now instead of two, right?

Oh well - a hopeful city still can turn its eyes to the next Major League Soccer expansion in 2022. That means there is only one expansion team left to be awarded. If either Sacramento or Cincinnati doesn't get a franchise now, they're nailed on to join a year later.

Benitez hits latest rut as Newcastle fall into drop-zone
We are a young team and when you are not winning you lose confidence, so we have to keep working this way. "We are a young team". Benitez's side are now without a win in their last nine Premier League matches and are in serious danger of relegation.

MLS Board of Governors was scheduled to meet and vote last week, though FC Cincinnati has been given no exact time when a public announcement may come. That's a valid argument.

The announcement is a likely sign that Nashville has been chosen for one of the league's two expansion teams, a bid the city has always been a strong contender for. A Miami ownership group spearheaded by former superstar David Beckham may get approval this winter.

The Tennessean reports an announcement from MLS is expected Wednesday in Nashville.

Is it really that hard for MLS to change its mind on the rules for this round of expansion? MLS, however, was swayed by the ownership, stadium plan, the city's cultural dynamic and demographics, and a pro sports market that has embraced the NHL's Predators.
