Ex-Staffer Left MSNBC After Accusing Chris Matthews Of Sexual Harassment

NBC Made Payment To Staffer After Sexual Harassment Claim Against Chris Matthews

TV "Hardball" host Chris Matthews was reprimanded after he was accused in 1999 of making inappropriate comments about a female employee, and the woman was given a separation payment, MSNBC said on Sunday. However, MSNBC disputed the sources' claims, saying that she was given the money as a severance payment that had nothing to do with Matthews' alleged comments, and that the full amount was "significantly less" than $40,000. She brought the incident to the attention of CNBC executives after being subject to Matthew's "jokes" in the presence of a group.

The website reported that the network decided Matthews' actions were "inappropriate and juvenile", but were not intended as propositions.

MSNBC did not confirm if this was the only claim against Matthews nor if the woman left the company exclusively due to this incident.

It is not clear whether Matthews' accuser left the company as a result of the allegations, although she has consequently gone on to work in a number of high-profile media positions. The NBC employee was an assistant producer on "Hardball with Chris Matthews". His sexually derogatory commentary regarding First Lady Melania Trump during US President Donald Trump's 2016 victory campaign in IN attracted widespread criticism earlier this year.

In late November, NBC News fired Matt Lauer, longtime host of "The Today Show", after an employee complained about inappropriate behavior.

MSNBC host Chris Matthews was accused of sexual harassment and NBC paid the woman who accused him to leave the network in 1999, according to a report.

In April, political talk show host Bill O'Reilly left Fox News after the New York Times reported he and his employer made payouts totaling about $13 million to five women to settle claims of sexual harassment and other inappropriate behavior.

NBC also cut ties with "Game Change" author and political analyst Mark Halperin in October after a dozen women accused him of sexual harassment and groping.
