This is under the leadership of a military intelligence official Luis Elizondo, who put in his resignation in October citing lack of support as the cause.

The Pentagon says the program has since been shuttered.

The program has countless videos of UFO encounters by military personnel, as well as interview about firsthand accounts, physiological studies of those who've come into contact with odd crafts, and possibly even samples of unusual technology.

"Why aren't we spending more time on this issue?" he pondered in his resignation letter to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

The Pentagon has acknowledged the existence of a secret program investigating unidentified flying objects (UFOs).

Elizondo told the Times that he kept working on the project out of his Pentagon office until his resignation, along with officials from the Navy and the Central Intelligence Agency, despite the lack of funding.

The shadowy program ended in 2012, according to the Defense Department, but the New York Times reported that it is still up and running - with officials continuing to study incidents brought to their attention by USA military service members while performing their regular duties at the Pentagon.

Research within the program, which was initially launched at the behest of Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader in 2007, was carried out by private contractor Bigelow Aerospace, a company owned by Reid's close friend and firm believer in extraterrestrial life, billionaire Robert Bigelow.

"This was so-called black money", Reid admitted to the Times.

The advanced Aerospace Threat Identifications program was started a decade ago at the urging of U.S. Sen. One 2004 DoD video obtained by the Times shows cockpit footage from a Navy F-18 Hornet chasing an object the size of a commercial airliner. Elizondo states that the program is still in operation and that he has a successor.

One of the pilots said that the mysterious rotating aircrafts were "going against the 120mph wind".

Reid, who is now retired, also said that he believed that developing the program was a right thing to do. "I think it's one of the good things I did in my congressional service".

An ex-member of Congress staff told Politico that the goal of the programme may have been to surveil the technological developments of rival foreign countries.

"There was really nothing there that we could justify using taxpayer money", the unnamed official said.
