Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary
The Portuguese pilots" strike scheduled for Wednesday was suspended by SPAC owing to Ryanair's decision to recognise the union "and its commitment to open negotiations with the aim of entering into a company agreement'.
And an IALPA official warned the talks may come too late to halt a strike.
Unions were yet to give their response but Ryanair's chief executive, Michael O'Leary, said: "Christmas flights are very important to our customers and we wish to remove any worry or concern that they may be disrupted by pilot industrial action next week".
Unions representing Ryanair pilots in Ireland and Portugal on Sunday suspended plans to strike before Christmas, lifting the threat of industrial action at the low-priced giant after it agreed on Friday to recognise trade unions for the first time.
Ryanair said on Friday it would recognise unions but IMPACT says further clarifications are needed.

It has asked the airline to release its pilot representatives so they can prepare for and attend the meeting. Ryanair made the landmark change in its policy after unionised pilots in Ireland, Portugal, Germany, Italy, and Spain all voted for industrial action in recent weeks.
German union Vereinigung Cockpit said the onus was now on Ryanair to "prove that this announcement is serious".
An upcoming Ryanair pilot strike has been suspended after the airline agreed to talks - much to the relief of those flying overseas for Christmas.
