Tesla activates world's biggest battery

Tesla powers on massive battery as South Australia prepares for summertime energy demands

Tesla's South Australia battery starts delivering power a day early

In this venture, Tesla delivered as promised, and well ahead of Musk's 100-day deadline, with the battery coming to life just 63 days after the grid connection-agreement was signed.

The facility which is being tested in the city of Jamestown is all set to launch officially soon and will be paired to the nearby Neoen Hornsdale Wind Farm for added stability.

The 100-megawatt (MW) battery, which is the world's largest, was built by Tesla in rural South Australia after Musk wagered a bet that he could built it in 100 days or the state would receive it for free.

The 100-megawatt Powerpack battery, connected to a wind farm in South Australia, is finally operational.

World's largest lithium-ion battery is now up and running in South Australia, and it's all thanks to Musk and Tesla.

The battery, according to Hornsdale Power Reserve, takes up less than 2.5 acres of land and has the ability to power 30,000 homes for an hour during a blackout.

Cyclone Ockhi: More than 80 fishermen goes missing
The system also had the potential of intensifying into a cyclonic storm around the latter part of the first week of December. Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor tweeted; "Some 450 Kerala fishermen on 80 boats missing at sea since last night".

The battery packs are expected to secure the region's electricity supply and allows for clean and affordable wind energy being dispatched to the grid.

South Australia, which relies heavily on solar and wind-generated energy, has been scrambling to find a way to bolster its fragile power grid since the entire state suffered a blackout during a storm a year ago. "We are proud to be part of South Australia's renewable energy future, and hope this project provides a model for future deployments around the world".

Over the past year and a half, South Australia has been hit by a series of blackouts.

This Friday, Jay Weatherhill, the state's premier, flipped the switch on the massive battery, calling it "history in the making".

After a competitive process, French renewable energy company Neoen and Tesla were awarded in July the contract to deliver the project.

Some have called the battery a "Hollywood solution", which likely stems from the flashy nature of the battery's creation in a country that does still rely partly on fossil fuels.
