After a vote in the UNSC on a draft resolution on the status of Jerusalem on Monday, Wu Haitao, charge d'affaires of China's permanent mission to the United Nations, said the issue of Palestine is at the core of Middle East peace and a root-cause issue.
The draft resolution was initially circulated by Egypt, expressed deep regret at the recent decision and affirmed that "any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition" of Jerusalem "have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded".
He called on the worldwide community to adhere to relevant Security Council resolutions and strengthen their efforts for the resumption of negotiations in order to find a solution to key issues, including the final status of Jerusalem.
"The draft resolution received 14 votes in favor..."
Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas has scrapped a meeting with Pence in protest at the Jerusalem announcement, and will instead head to Saudi Arabia to meet King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.
"Our view is that the issue of Jerusalem is a final status issue, that Jerusalem should be a shared capital for Israelis and for Palestinians, and the U.K. Embassy, for now, will remain in Tel Aviv", Matthew Rycroft told reporters before the vote.
"What we witnessed here in the Security Council is an insult".
But one by one, ambassadors of the 14 countries that supported the resolution said after the vote that the US violated council resolutions which make clear that no country can unilaterally decide that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.
The Palestinian government slammed the U.S. veto as "unacceptable".
The deputy prime minister said Turkey believes that United Nations members will stick to their earlier decisions and global law.
Abbas also signed 22 agreements and worldwide treaties to strengthen the legal status of the state of Palestine on a global scale.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video on his Twitter account in which he thanked Haley for the United States veto.
"In the wake of the decision of the United States ... the situation has become more tense with an increase in incidents, notably rockets fired from Gaza and clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces", U.N. Middle East peace envoy Nickolay Mladenov told the Security Council ahead of the vote.
The vetoed resolution would also have reiterated a call to reverse "the negative trends on the ground that are imperiling the two-state solution" that would see the states of Israel and the Palestine living side-by-side in peace.
The draft resolution had included a call on all countries to refrain from opening embassies in Jerusalem, reflecting concerns that other governments could follow the U.S. lead. The United States is a genuine partner.in the Balfour Declaration...
Netanyahu compared Haley to the Maccabees, Jewish warriors commemorated during the current Jewish holiday of Hannukkah for revolting against Hellenic rulers, rededicating the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem and establishing a Jewish Kingdom in Judea.
