Yemen's Saleh ready for 'new page' with Saudi-led coalition as clashes rage
Yemen's General People's Congress (GPC) party, founded by the country's former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, has confirmed the death of its leader, the Al Arabiya TV channel reported on Monday.
"Our appeals to the leader of the conference were met with a negative attitude", Houthi said.
An extremely graphic video allegedly showing the corpse of Ali Abdullah Saleh has surfaced on social media.
"The decision by (Saleh's) General People's Congress to take the lead and their choice to side with their people will free Yemen of ... militias loyal to Iran", the coalition said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.
The exact circumstances of his death could not be immediately confirmed.
Saleh ruled Yemen for more than three decades until he was forced to resign following the Arab Spring uprising of 2011.
"Saleh's actions in Yemen, in working with his former opponents the Houthis, were complicating numerous efforts at resolving the conflict", Harrison Akins, a researcher with the Howard Baker Center, told Newsweek.
Without mentioning Saleh by name, he said that he knew about the ex-President's communication with the Saudis and his efforts to turn against the Houthis.

But even without Saleh's loyalists, the rebels remain a powerful force and it is unclear how much the break with Saleh weakens them.
Earlier on Sunday, the Yemeni ministry said that dozens of Saleh militiamen were arrested, stressing that the "conspiracy" plotted by Saleh against Ansarullah movement was contained and that security was restored to Sanaa.
Saleh's statement was dubbed "deception" by the Houthis, who were in alliance with the former President.
The two sides allied and seized power in late 2014, triggering a civil war and a military intervention by a coalition led by Saudi Arabia.
The former president of Yemen and a main player in its long-running civil war has been killed after an enemy faction attacked his house, according to reports. "However, I don't feel that his death will greatly impact the war, as he had recently split with the Houthi forces as he tried to end the Saudi blockade, which undermines any argument that he held sway with the Houthi leadership".
The fighting in the capital of Sanaa caused residents to cower in their homes as explosions rocked the city overnight.
Iran supports the Houthis politically but denies that it has helped to arm the rebel group. The Houthis appeared to be targeting the homes of Saleh's family, political allies and commanders in this most recent round of fighting.
The Saudi-led coalition imposed a total blockade in October on the country, where almost 80 percent of the people need humanitarian aid to survive.
