Feinstein releases Senate testimony from co-founder of research firm behind notorious Trump dossier

Michael Cohen filed a defamation lawsuit against Buzz Feed for publishing an unverified dossier of allegations about Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia

U.S. Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein on Tuesday released testimony from the founder of the Fusion GPS firm that researched President Donald Trump's ties to Russian Federation and produced a dossier denounced by the White House.

The congressional panel is one of three investigating the Russian Federation matter.

Russian Federation has repeatedly denied allegations of meddling in the USA election and Trump denies any collusion between his campaign and Moscow officials. "The only way to set the record straight is to make the transcript public".

The FBI responded to Steele "by September", Simpson said, and Steele then met in mid- or late September with an FBI legal attaché in Rome.

Feinstein said Democrats supported releasing the transcript, CNBC reports.

"Essentially what he told me was they had other intelligence about this matter from an internal Trump campaign source", Simpson said.

The transcript of the interview was released on Tuesday.

After Democrats began paying for the research, Fusion GPS hired Christopher Steele, a former senior officer with Britain's intelligence service, MI6, to gather intelligence about any ties between the Kremlin and Trump and his associates.

In recent weeks, as the political fights about the Russian Federation investigation and the dossier have intensified, Simpson has urged the committee to release the full transcript of his interview, arguing that Republicans are trying to obscure, rather than reveal, what happened in 2016.

Simpson told investigators that Steele is "basically a Boy Scout", saying he has worked with Steele on and off since 2009 and he knew him to be "a person who delivered quality work in very appropriate ways".

Simpson told investigators it was his understanding that the Federal Bureau of Investigation "believed Chris's information might be credible because they had other intelligence that indicated the same thing and one of those pieces of intelligence was a human source from inside the Trump organization".

Last week Simpson, a former journalist, requested that the committee release the transcript in an op-ed in the New York Times, writing: "the public still has much to learn about a man with the most troubling business past of any United States president".

Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, which has also interviewed members of Fusion GPS, also appeared to back Grassley's rationale last week.

Feinstein said Americans deserve to see what Simpson said. "Feinstein for her courage".
